Birth - FAQ's

Birth. Such an intense and beautiful moment in your life that will change you forever. On your birth day, you become a mom, maybe for the very first time. I can understand why you would want to remember it forever! Until that day comes, I'm sure you'll have some questions, so let me give you some answers.

Do I even need a birth photographer?

Listen, I'm not going to tell you what to do, but I will tell you a couple things that might make you realize that the photos of your birth will be some of the best documented memories you'll ever have. (I actually wrote a blog post about this, so go check it out!) To put it short and simple, the birth of you baby (or babies) is going to be one of the most monumental events in your life. You're going to want to remember the look of pure, uncontrollable joy on your face when the doctor or midwife places your baby on your chest. You'll love looking back at your other children meeting baby for the first time, or your partner as they cuddle your new child on their chest. Just trust me...this is one day you won't want to forget!

But why is birth photography so expensive?

This question is actually a lot simpler than it seems. Time. As your birth photographer, I am going to invest so much time into your life. I will be on call for you, which means that from 38 weeks until your baby is born, I am going to drop anything and everything to attend and document your birth. Sure, it might be my son's birthday, or Christmas morning, and maybe I can't schedule a vacation for 4+ weeks at a time, but I am here for you. You have my undivided attention. There's certainly more to it, but I can assure you that your investment is being put to good use.

I'm in! What is included in my birth session?

 - First things first, we will meet up and go over everything there is to know! Feel free to ask all your questions.

- As previously stated, I will be on call for you from 38 weeks until baby is born.

- Once you are in active labor (about 6cm dilated if you are getting cervical checks done. If not, once your contractions have a solid pattern, and you can no longer talk through them!), I will arrive within 2 hours to begin documenting your birth story!

And don't worry, we will be in constant communication before and during your labor to make sure that I arrive at the perfect moment.

- I will stay 1-2 hours after baby is born to capture all those special moments between mom and baby, along with any other family members that you wish to include during that time. (If you wish to get photos with family who won't be there at that time - later that day, or on another day - we can schedule a Fresh 48 session!)

- Once it is all said and done, I will deliver your professionally edited images to you in an online gallery within 2-3 weeks after the birth. Birth is extremely unpredictable and anything can happen, but it is my goal to provide you with at least 75-150+ images. The exact number of images is truly determined by your birth story and how it transpires.

What happens if you miss the birth?

This is something that I will do everything in my power to avoid. Of course, life is also unpredictable, so it's unfortunately a possibility (even if slim). If I am unable to attend your birth, I will send a backup photographer in my place. Don't worry, they will be amazing! If you happen to have a labor that maybe went a little quicker than you thought, I will still make every effort to arrive and document as much as I possibly can to tell your story!

* Make sure to ask your provider ahead of time if they will allow the birth to be photographed. Not all hospitals allow c sections to be photographed. If this is the case, we still should be able to document your labor and recovery.

Do you use flash while documenting?

This is totally up to you! I am able to document your birth with or without it. You can even change your mind during labor if you chose to let me use it, but you decide that it's bothering you. My main goal is to make sure that I am getting all the photos I can, but without disturbing mom. You're going to be doing enough work, so I don't want to be distracting.

A few things to think about when making your decision. If your labor ends up being at night, or in a very dimly lit room, flash vs no flash can be an important decision. Without the flash, you will have the freedom to labor without being distracted by it. But, in doing so, your final images may have a bit more grain and lack a little sharpness/clarity. If you choose to allow me to use a flash in this circumstance, you very well may notice it (although I have heard from numerous professionals that their clients have said they don't!). But, you will also receive images with little to no grain that will also be a lot sharper/clearer. So it really is up to you! No matter what, your images will be beautiful, and I can assure you that it will all work out.

Are you going to share my birth photos on the internet?

This is totally up to you!* I can share none, some, or all of your images, depending on what you are comfortable with. I will make sure to go over this in depth with you during our consultation. Then, you can let me know not only what type of photos you want (the whole thing...bring on the crowning pics! Or, keep it modest please, I'd like to keep my privates private, thanks...), but also what you are okay with me sharing. Sharing these images online can be a truly empowering experience for women around the world. I know that I personally feel all the more capable of birthing my own children when I see other women in their greatest moments of strength. I think it makes us feel less alone and more encouraged that we are fully capable of such an intense, yet beautiful thing!

Also, if you would like to share your images online, you can do so by sharing the album I will create for you! Just remember to tag me in any original posts.

*If you are doing a discounted birth session, you will have to agree to sign a model release, which allows me to share the images however I wish.
